Least Common Factor

Right wing gay men have always asserted that their sexuality has nothing to do with their social conscience or political consciousness, so it’s no surprise to observe the whiff of triumphalism in Crain and Sullivan as they reiterate their disdain for what they have always seen as the “liberal” foolishness of the idea of LGBT “community,” and rub their hands a little at its apparent demise.

What has been a bit surprising, however, is the haste with which allegedly progressive gays (chiefly Aravosis and his apologists) have purchased that line of thinking in an effort to authorize the ethics of the ENDA situation. What, at this point, separates these people from the Log Cabin Republicans, escapes me.

It is true, as has been pointed out many times, that sexual orientation and gender identity are not the same (though I maintain that they are more inter-related than many people would like to consider). But they seem strangely eager to shred an entire generation’s evolving concept in service of themselves, and to reduce gay, lesbian, etc. to nothing more than their most base feature. No “community.” No values beyond the legitimation of a proclivity. Just a large interest group, bound not by principles or conscience, but only by the sexual act.

After all this time, what finally unites the gay left and right is the need to toss transpeople out the door.

  1. In my experience, it’s tossing queers out the door, not just trannies. They like to draw the line of queer behavior just beyond where they live, the line of perversion just beyond their behavior.

“Well, sure, I shove gerbils up my ass, like any normal person, but they shove hamsters up their ass, and as everyone knows, that’s just sick!”

They seem to believe that the easiest way to be accepted as normative is to try to find a common enemy and hate them even more than the normies do.

“Sure, I enjoy sodomy on a Saturday night, but those bisexuals freak me out too. Pick a gender and stick to it, you freaks!”

  3. didn’t he use to -be- a Log Cabin Republican, Aravosis? i mean officially.

basically as far as i can tell the difference is the little “D” on the voter registration card, and the attendant cheerleading for candidates of the proper “team.” ’s about it though. i mean i think he was even pro-war for a good while.
